Loyola Men’s Hoops: Joey Stiebing Named Assistant Basketball Coach

Loyola University New Orleans athletic director and head men’s basketball coach Dr. Michael Giorlando announced former University of New Orleans head coach Joey Stiebing has joined his staff as an assistant.

Stiebing led the Privateers from 1997-2001. In his four seasons with UNO, he amassed a 57-58 record. In 2001, he was named Sun Belt Conference coach of the year as the Privateers finished with a 17-12 mark. Prior to being named head coach, Stiebing was an assistant on the Lakefront from 1990-97, serving under Tim Floyd and Tic Price. Giorlando and Stiebing served together on the same staff at UNO in 1991-92 and 1997-2001.

“I am excited to have Joey join our staff. He has tremendous experience at the college and international levels. He brings a wealth of recruiting contacts that will assist us as we continue to grow our program,” stated Giorlando.

After UNO, Stiebing was the head coach for the Qatar national team from 2003-07. He led the squad to a third place finish at the Asian Games in 2005 and an appearance at the World Basketball Championships in 2006.

“I am thrilled to be back in New Orleans and working again with Coach Giorlando. Loyola University is a fantastic place and I’m looking forward to getting to know our players. This is a great opportunity for me to get back to my hometown and return to the college game,” said Stiebing.

Stiebing graduated from LSU in 1985 with a degree education. While in Baton Rouge, he served as a student manager to Dale Brown’s Tigers from 1982-84. Stiebing earned a master’s degree from UNO in 1997.

Fletcher’s Take: I love this move but now the pressure is on! If Loyola doesn’t win immediately I’ll be very very very upset and believe that changes should be made! The program now has scholarships and has no reason not to win. The women’s team has thrived with scholarships under coach DooBee Plaisance. Great hire Dr. Giorlando, you’ve given your team more respurces than any other at the school…..now, just win some games!
