Kudos to the LSU Tigers baseball team.
6 weeks ago many experts believed they were a team that had no chance, that was too young, to far removed from the glory days.
But second year head coach Paul Mainieri kept his head high, he kept his team together and remained patient and confident.
Today the Tigers are the hottest team in the country. LSU has won a whopping 23 straight games and will face the University of California-Irvine in a best two of three super regional next weekend.
The winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
LSU has not been to the CWS since 2004.
On top of being the hottest team, LSU also has the hottest player in all of college baseball.
Sophomore designated hitter Blake Dean is on a run right now that’s totally amazing. The baseball must look like a beach ball to this lefty slugger. He’s crushing everything thrown his way.
Last week he was named MVP of the Southeastern Conference Tournament…this week, he earned MVP honors in the Baton Rouge Regional.
This super regional between LSU and UC-Irvine should be a great one.
The Anteaters have one of the top ERA’s in the country. The Tigers are one of college baseball’s top hitting clubs. It’s a cliche, but something’s gotta give! Great pitching meets great hitting!
Since it’s inception 10 years ago LSU has played in 7 super regionals. The tigers have won 4 and lost 3. The 4 LSU won were all played in Alex Box Stadium.
As I write this column the Tulane Green Wave are also fighting to earn a birth into a super regional.
Tulane plays Florida State in Tallahassee Monday at 6pm.
The winner of that game will face either Oklahoma State or Wichita State in a super regional.
Tulane coach Rick Jones says he may throw wave ace Shooter Hunt in Monday’s deciding game. Hunt is expected to be a first round draft choice in the Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday. If Hunt gets the nod he’d be throwing on just 2 days rest.
Also, despite bowing out of the Baton Rouge regional UNO is back on the map. Coach Tom Walter has brought back a program that was dormant for so many years. Let’s just hope UNO does everything in it’s power to keep a truly great college baseball coach.
And finally, a truly random note to end on…..great look Southern Mississippi!
Playing in the baton Rouge regional The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team featured the coolest uniforms I’ve seen in some time.
