METAIRIE – Saints wide receiver Marques Colston unexpectedly skipped the team’s voluntary Organized Team Activity on Monday morning.

Colston, who is seeking a contract extension, had been participating in the team’s voluntary offseason workout program. Coach Sean Payton said he didn’t know why Colston was not on hand, but planned to talk to him later in the day to find out.

No. 1 draft choice Sedrick Ellis and offensive lineman Matt Lehr were excused from the workout, Payton said. Defensive end Will Smith, who had skipped the offseason program prior to the mandatory mini-camp two weeks ago as he tries to get a new contract, worked out Monday. He has participated in the OTAs since the end of mini-camp July 1.

The offseason program concludes Thursday.
