When the Saints travel to Arizona this week to take on the Cardinals in a preseason game … one player to keep an eye out for is #37 on the Cards. The man wearing that jersey number is former LSU standout Ali Highsmith.
The Miami native was signed as an undrafted free agant after a spectacular year with the Tigers, but unspectacular work out leading up to the draft.
Highsmith ran a terrible 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine and at his pro-day at LSU. Once mentioned as a possible late first, early second round pick, Highsmith fell completely out of the draft. I – like many of the Tiger faithful was stunned. I though Highsmith was the anchor of the LSU defense last year, that’s a defense that also had 5th over all pick Glenn Dorsey suiting up. I believe the Cardinals got a steal signing Highsmith as a key free agent. Highsmith is a playmaker, a football player who was always around the ball and a true leader on a BCS National Title team.
Even though he’s wearing #37 Highsmith is tying to make the Cards as a linebacker, not a safety. Sort of a ‘tweener, Highsmith will have to show coaches in Arizona he can play both weakside and outside linebacker and be a consistent contributor on special teams.
So far – what were hearing – is that linebackers and defensive coaches for the Cards are impressed with Highsmith’s attitude and smarts during the teams OTA’s. He should see serious playing, most likely in the second quarter and second half, in the Saints game and we are cheering for him to impress and make the team. Remember this Saints fans – one of the greatest players to play safety for the Saints was an undrafted free agent who was considered a ‘tweener and coaches didn’t know if he was a linebacker of safety.
I’m sure everyone remembers Sammy Knight.
