2009 Saints Mock Draft

Yeah yeah yeah…It’s way to early for mock drafts….guys will rise and fall like the dow between now and the draft in April but I can’t help myself.

So here is what is sure to be the first of many 2009 Saints Mock Drafts:

1st ROUND: (14th Overall Selection)

-Rey Maualuga

Inside Linebacker

USCreymaualuga

6’2, 260 lbs

I think safety is the Saints greatest need but USC’s Taylor Mays will be gone by the 14th pick. Maualuga may also be gone but many mock drafts have him available at #14.  In picking Maualuga the Saints get arguably the most complete defensive player in the 2009 draft.  A true inside linebacker, the selection of  Maualuga could allow the team to slide Jonathan Vilma (assuming he’s re-signed) to the weak side.

If Maualuga is gone (which is very possible) other players to keep in mind are Missouri safety William Moore or Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis.

Unfortunately I’m also hearing rumblings and grumblings regarding the Saints trading down from the 14th spot and trying to pick up additional draft picks.  My reaction to that news:  FOOLISH!

A good defensive player will be available at #14.

**NO SECOND OR THIRD ROUND SELECTIONS. TWO FOURTH ROUND CHOICES.

4th ROUND:

 -Courtney Greene

Safety

6’2, 210 lbs

Green is a player who was projected as a day one pick but who’s falling fast.  Right now Greene is expected to be on the board when the Saints are picking in the 4th round.  (Could be the 2009 Carl Nicks)

4th ROUND:

-LaGarrette Blount

Runningback

University of Oregonblount2_400

6’2, 240 lbs

Blount is a big bruising back that could be the Saints short yardage answer.

He’s a former Mississippi JUCO All American who’s probably going to leave school early for the NFL.

NO FIFTH OR SIXTH ROUND SELECTIONS

7th ROUND:

-D.J. CLARK

Cornerback

Idaho State Universitydj-clarke

6’2, 200 lbs

Since becoming a starter during his sophomore season Clark has led his team in interceptions.
