Several times a week, McAllister says, he undergoes a medical treatment known as Active Release Therapy (ART), also known as Active Release Technique.
“You wouldn’t believe it if you saw it,” he says.
Therapists, McAllister says, use various implements – including one “that looks like a big butter knife” – to “smooth out” and loosen the muscles of his hips and upper legs.
“The doctors think that the tightness in both by hips and my quadriceps is what has led to a lot of my knee issues,” McAllister says. “Basically, we are working to loosen up my hips and upper legs to take some of the pressure off my knees.”
The ART sessions, he says, are a deep tissue massage that leave him “literally all bruised up.”
