2009 Saints Mock Draft

I’ve been saying over and over and over that the Saints would use the #14 pick in the 1st round of the NFL draft on a defensive player.

But I’m officially changing my tune! I think the Saints will do whatever possible to move down in the 1st round and secure a pick in the second round. But will the Saints find a team willing to swap 1st rounders and give the black and gold a second rounder?

If the Saints can’t trade down I think they’ll draft an offensive player at #14.

I love the 3 linebackers at USC (Cushing, Maualuga, Matthews Jr.) but I’m not sure any could come in and start immediately.

I also like Ohio State defensive back Malcolm Jenkins but like the trio from USC I’m not sure Jenkins could make an immediate impact.

To me, this team needs an impact player ASAP!  The Saints are built to win now.

Therefore…I think the teams first round pick will be (drum roll please)……

1ST ROUND: 14TH OVERALL

Fletcher’s take: Moreno would immediately emerge as the full time starter Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas have failed to become.  No offense to Bush and Thomas…they’re productive players who will still be used in the roles they’ve filled in recent years but Moreno would be the starter.

NO SECOND OR THIRD ROUND SELECTIONS BUT TWO FOURTH ROUND CHOICES.

4th Round:

Cary Harris: Cornerback

USC

5’11  185 LBS

Was a three-year starter for the Trojans…Played extensively as a backup and special teamer as a true freshman in 2005…Took over a starting job in 2006…Had surgery on a sprained finger prior to 2007 spring practice…Started 12 games in 2007 but missed one contest with a dislocated shoulder…Had arthroscopic surgery on both of his ankles prior to 2008 spring practice…Missed a couple of starts in 2008 with a hamstring injury…Named Honorable Mention All-Pac 10 as a junior and senior..Underrated prospect with the potential to start in the NFL.

Adequate size / bulk and is still getting bigger…Quick and agile…Plays quite a bit faster than he times…Excellent strength…Has a fantastic motor…Is very intelligent with good awareness…Will offer a lot of versatility…Intense and competitive…Hard worker…Nice production.
Had a fantastic senior campaign and really improved his draft stock…Natural pass rusher who doesn’t possess outstanding triangle numbers but just seems to have a knack for getting after the quarterback…A prospect on the rise.

{Fletcher’s Note:  If the Saints trade down look for them to perhaps deal with the New York Giants or the Miami Dolphins.  Both of those teams have two picks in the second round (the Giants second pick in round two is actually the one they got from the Saints for Jeremy Shockey).  It would also not surprise me one bit to see Jason David and one of the Saints two 4th round picks moved for a 3rd round selection.}

If the Saints trade down in the 1st round and pick anywhere between 22-32 look for them to perhaps take one of the following players:

-Darius Butler: CB University of Connecticut

-Victor “Macho” Harris: CB Virginia Tech

-Sean Smith: CB/S University of Utah

-Louis Delmas: FS Western Michigan University

If the team obtains a 2nd round choice I’d remember these guys:

-Max Unger: C University of Oregon

-Ron Brace: DT Boston College

-LeSean McCoy: RB University of Pittsburgh

-William Moore: SS University of Missouri

-Patrick Chung: SS University of Oregon

ALL IN ALL…LOTS  OF TALENT AT THE END OF THE FIRST ROUND AND IN THE SECOND ROUND SO LOOK FOR THE SAINTS DO BE VERY ACTIVE TRYING TO MOVE DOWN IN AN EFFORT TO OBTAIN MORE PICKS!
