Rebuilding The Hornets Around Anthony Davis

Building Around “The Brow”
May 31, 2012

The Hornets have won the NBA Draft Lottery…meaning professional basketball in NOLA will feature ‘The Bayou Brow’ aka Anthony Davis.

Considered the best prospect at power forward since Tim Duncan…the 18-year-old Davis is the reigning NCAA college player of the year after leading the University of Kentucky to a national championship.

Therefore, the rebuilding of the Hornets got a major jump-start Wednesday night.

Now, how do the Hornets build around Davis?

Here’s how:

Sign Eric Gordon: With Davis on-board and with Gordon’s hometown Pacers on record saying they will not not make a big play for another team’s restricted free agent this summer…Gordon staying in NOLA becomes more likely.  The Nets, Mavs and Celts might pursue but the Hornets will probably mach.  I envision a 4-year, $58 million dollar deal ($14.8 annually) for EG.

Keep Emeka Okafor: I’ve been on the ‘amnesty Okafor’ kick for a long time…but Davis is scrawny and needs a protector in the paint.  That’s Okafor.  Emeka is a smart, classy, defensive-minded player who can help Anthony Davis.  Okafor is over-paid but he’s needed for one more year.

Expand Jason Smith’s role: Keeping Okafor is now probably necessary…but so is playing Jason Smith more at center.  I would start Jason Smith at enter and Anthony Davis at power forward and bring Okafor off the bench.  I can see Smith thriving next to Davis.  Smith can run and jump as well as any big in the game and he’ll get lots of open looks in the paint as teams double Davis.  Smith had a career year last season and his numbers should improve with Davis’ arrival.

Sign Goran Dragic:  I’ve been on Dragic for a long time.  With his strong play down the stretch for the Houston Rockets the 25-year-old proved he’s a floor leader and a starting point guard in the NBA.  Dragic was scouted and drafted by Dell Demps when Demps was with San Antonio, the Hornets can pay Dragic a hefty sum and the Slovenian should see the makings of a playoff team with Davis and Gordon.

Sign Jeff Green:  Green helped turn OKC into the winner it is today.  He missed all of last season with a heart issue but will be cleared to play in 2012-2013.  Green is only 26 years old, he’s a winner and a smart, classy player.  Coming in as the Hornets starting small forward and playing next to guys like Gordon, Davis and Dragic makes his life good and the Hornets a legitimate playoff contender.

The #10 draft pick:  Since the Hornets landed the #1 pick (Davis) they can really go in any direction with the #10 pick.  Lots of experts have the Hornets selecting a point guard (Damian Lillard or Kendal Marshall)…I like another point guard/combo guard, Austin Rivers.  Other strong options are Tyler Zeller…a center from UNC would join Davis in the Hornets front court for years to come or maybe Royce White.  White is a small forward from Iowa State who’d be a huge reach at #10 because of off-the-court issues and a disorder which results in a fear of flying.  For those who like White…take a better look at Terrence Jones from the University of Kentucky…Jones and White are similar but Jones is better.

I also have a trade idea for the #10 pick.  If San Antonio has a player they like at #10…I’d send the 10th pick to the Spurs for the rights to two foreign players San Antonio has stashed over seas.  #10 pick to Spurs, French PG Nando de Colo and Latvian SF Davis Bertans to Hornets.

Trevor Ariza:  Ariza will not be back with the Hornets.  A person from his inner circle told me “their is 99.9% chance he’s somewhere else next season.” In my opinion, Ariza is good trade bait and if he cannot be traded the team may use amnesty on him.  Personally, I’d try to get Cleveland interested in Ariza.  He’s a Byron Scott type of player, he’s only 26 years old and the guy can still play!  I’m thinking Ariza and Greivis Vasquez to Cavaliers for Luke Walton and two picks in this years draft (#24 and #34 overall.)

In closing, the players listed below could be the Hornets starting (crunch-time) five:

I like it, I’M IN!!!!!

PG: Goran Dragic

SG: Eric Gordon

SF: Jeff Green

PF: Anthony Davis

C: Jason Smith
